The Packers will wear their alternate 1929 uniforms for their game against Cleveland next month.

GREEN BAY -- The Green Bay Packers will still wear their throwback uniforms for their Oct. 20 game against the Cleveland Browns at Lambeau Field, even though they'll have to make a slight modification: Wearing  their normal helmets instead of the brown ones they've worn in the past that were meant to mimic the leather headgear of the time.

Last month, the National Football League sent a directive to all 32 teams that for health and safety reasons, the league wanted players to wear their normal helmets rather than special ones to match the throwbacks. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy was quoted Tuesday in stories about the Tampa Bay Buccaneers scrapping their plans to wear their "Creamsicle" throwbacks saying that the league's Head, Neck and Spine Committee and Players Safety Advisory Panel had made the recommendation.

Packers public relations director Jason Wahlers said via email Wednesday morning that the team will go ahead with its throwback plans, just with stripped-down gold helmets.

"We will still wear our third jersey, but we will utilize our regular gold helmet without a logo and stripe," Wahlers wrote.
